October 27th is National Pit Bull Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to bring positive awareness and attention to the American Pit Bull Terrier and Pit Bull mixes. Over the last few years, FMAS has been inundated with abused, neglected, and abandoned Pit Bull mixes, and, because we don’t know they’re backgrounds, it is difficult to place them in homes, especially with children or other animals. On average, a Pit Bull mix will live at the shelter for six months before finding a suitable home.

“All animals deserve the love and respect of a responsible owner,” remarks Shelter Manager, Shelley Greenglass. “I really believe with responsible ownership that pit bulls make great family pets and companions. It’s important to keep these dogs and all dogs out of the wrong hands.”

FMAS has made great strides to prevent the pet population and especially the Pit Bull population. Our groundbreaking Fix-A-Pit program offers free spay/neuter, vaccinations, and micro-chipping to Manchester owners of Pit Bulls and Pit Bull type dogs. Since its inception three years ago, over 310 dogs have received this service, which encourages responsible pet ownership and helps these dogs live longer and healthier lives.
