Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter annual Plant Sale

The Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter is pleased to announce its 6th Annual Plant Sale, on the grounds of the Manchester Animal Shelter, on Saturday, June 2^nd  from 9am to 1pm.

A variety of plants including annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, shrubs and trees will be offered for sale with all proceeds benefiting the animals.  The plants for sale are generously donated by local garden clubs, local businesses and local gardeners.  A raffle table with fantastic items will again be available this year hosted by the Windham Garden Club.  The raffle items in years past have been the subject of friendly arguments by enthusiastic participants.  Don’t miss out on this year’s items!   If you are interested in donating items for the raffle table or plants from either your business or your own garden, please contact the shelter at plantsale@manchesteranimalshelter.org.

Visitors are invited to tour the animal shelter and meet some of the animals available for adoption.

This event will be held rain or shine.

The Manchester Animal Shelter (FMAS) is urging pet owners to treat their animals humanely, even when faced with high veterinary bills. The call comes after a Manchester man was recently arrested for cruelty and neglect after attempting to kill his sick cat and leaving it for dead.

Smokey, whose owner lives in Manchester, NH, was brought to a veterinarian’s office after coming down with a Urinary Tract Infection. The vet suggested that the owner take the cat to the Veterinary Emergency Center of Manchester on Abby Road for further treatment. Reports indicate that the owner agreed. A short time later, a concerned citizen heard meowing and found Smokey dazed and confused in a Manchester field, with his IV fluid bag and E-collar still attached.

According to Manchester Animal Control, the owner had allegedly taken Smokey to a field in Manchester, held the animal by the neck, snapped it to break it, and left him for dead. The owner, reportedly, could not afford to care for Smokey any longer and decided, instead, to kill his cat and throw the feline away.

The citizen who found Smokey brought him to the Veterinary Emergency Center of Manchester , where the cat was originally supposed to arrive. After piecing the story together, the Emergency Clinic staff called Manchester Animal Control. Smokey’s owner was interviewed and later police issued an arrest warrant. At that point the Manchester Animal Shelter took over all medical expenses to help Smokey recover.

Providing healthcare of animals due to monetary circumstances is “one of the most common calls we receive at the shelter,” according to MAS Manager Shelley Greenglass. “People cannot afford veterinary care for their animals. They do not want to give them up, but do not have the money for care.” Smokey’s circumstances, though, were particularly appalling. “To take it to that length– what this man did– I have not heard of this happening before. It makes me sad to think this animal trusted his owner,” Greenglass said.

There are other options for owners who cannot afford to care for their animal including working with the vet to make a payment schedule or checking various animal shelters for assistance

programs. When in doubt the Manchester Animal Shelter urges pet owners to talk to their vet or local animal shelter. Smokey is currently recovering at the Manchester Animal Shelter shelter, located at 490 Dunbarton Road, where he is under care for his Urinary Tract Infection. Smokey is a survivor, and should be healed and ready for adoption if the owner is found guilty of his charges.

Those looking to help defer the costs of Smokey’s recovery, or to help the Manchester Animal Shelter in caring for other abused or neglected animals can  donate to the “Tonka Fund,” named in honor of Tonka, a neglected and emaciated dog who was found in December 2010 in Manchester. To specifically help Smokey, donors can specify “Smokey” in their donation comment box.
