Shelter Stars

If you know a person or a group who should be considered a "shelter star", tell us in 500 words or less what they have done to support the Manchester Animal Shelter. Email your submission to shelterstar@manchesteranimalshelter.org

Meet Shelter Stars: Isabella and Breanna Dionne

Isabella and Breanna Dionne are 13 year old twins. They are both in the 8th grade at Auburn Village School. They have contributed with a rather unique concept. In their spare time, they write and publish a small magazine full of ideas and stories. They call it "TWINZ". They publish every season and then sell the magazines to raise donation money. Their last contribution was over $100! Keep up the good work Isabella and Breanna!

Meet Shelter Star: Lucy Karlin

11-year old Lucy Karlin worked hard and spent many weeks preparing for a way to benefit the shelter. Lucy accepted the invitation of Mr. & Mrs. Pat Cassier of Deerfield Leathers, who were hosting a motorcycle "ride-in" to benefit local kids and let Lucy and her friend, Thalia Lloyd, set up a refreshment stand at the ride site. With bottled water donated by Dwight Barnes (who owns the local McDonald's franchise) and baked goods from Mrs. Cassier, the girls raised $100 for the Manchester Animal Shelter.

Lucy, along with her parents, Mary and Jeff Karlin, received a tour of the shelter, afterwich Lucy was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for her devotion to the stray and homeless animals in Manchester, NH.

One of the really nice things about this story is that Lucy's friend, Thalia, is already a "shelter star" (read Thalia's story below). It just goes to show how one act of generosity can catch on and inspire others. We hope that Lucy and Thalia have a lot of other friends who will be moved by their hard work and good deeds.

Meet Shelter Star: Thalia Lloyd

Meet 11-year old Thalia Lloyd. What Thalia was able to accomplish (with just a little help from her parents) is unbelievable. As Thalia puts it, "I started off raising money by selling candy bars and then moved on to candy, t-shirts, and then tote bags. It was a lot of work, but with a little encouragement from reading some terribly sad stories about neglected animals, I pulled it off."

She certainly did pull it off! Earlier this year, Thalia and her parents came into the shelter and presented FMAS President, Dave Jagodowski, with a check for $431.70!!! And as if that wasn't enough, she also brought in two full boxes of goodies and treats for the animals themselves.

The Lloyd family received a private tour of the shelter, after which Thalia was presented with a special Certificate of Appreciation for her "outstanding generosity, devotion to our cause, and her caring and compassion for the stray and homeless animals in Manchester, NH."

On behalf of FMAS, we wish to say a sincere "Thank You" to our shelter stars, Thalia and Lucy. We are indeed grateful for your contribution. And as much as it helps the animals, it also fills us with much hope and faith for the future when we see young people, like yourself, capable of such selfless and generous actions, and devotion to their community.
